UNION - LUCMA PATA

This is Lucma Pata, a town within the bigger metropolis of Huánuco (Perú). This is where I am now. I have been working on my master's degree at Duquesne from Peru during the pandemic like many students this year. I am experiencing classes beyond the borders of the university.

This city is known for having three different climates: first the mountain range which is very cold; then the middle part which is very fresh with sun, wind, and rain; and, finally, there is the jungle where the heat is as intense as the Amazon is green. Also, this city is well-known as the home of composer Daniel Alomía Robles who wrote “El Cóndor Pasa.”
Esta ciudad es conocida por tener tres climas diferentes: primero la cordillera que es muy fría; luego la parte media que es muy fresca con sol, viento y lluvia; y, finalmente, está la selva donde el calor es tan intenso como el verde del Amazonas. Además, esta ciudad es conocida por ser el hogar del compositor Daniel Alomía Robles que escribió “El Cóndor Pasa”.

Instead of describing what you would see in Lucma Pata, I will introduce you to the sounds of this city. The wind is very common. After noon it is very characteristic to hear and feel the strong gales. In particular, we hear the wind in the trees. I have observed that the huarango trees with large thorns and tiny leaves have a sound much louder and higher than thick leaves. While the trees with larger leaves that move with more effort scrape each other emitting wider sound.
Another characteristic sound is the shooting tests, bombs carried out by the army at military base in the city. The stream, which runs down from the highest part of the hill, is also a characteristic sounds of the place. Then we can also hear the sounds of the animals emit, such as the singing birds, the barking dogs, the ducks that always run in the field, as well as the bulls who work in the field plowing the land. Heavy rains can also be considered common sounds of the place.
En lugar de describir lo que verías en Lucma Pata, te presentaré los sonidos de esta ciudad. El viento es muy común. Pasado el mediodía es muy característico escuchar y sentir los fuertes vendavales. En particular, escuchamos el viento en los árboles. He observado que los árboles de huarango con espinas grandes y hojas diminutas tienen un sonido mucho más fuerte y alto que las hojas gruesas. Mientras que los árboles con hojas más grandes que se mueven con más esfuerzo se raspan entre sí emitiendo un sonido más amplio.
Otro sonido característico son las pruebas de tiro, bombas realizadas por el ejército en la base militar de la ciudad. El arroyo, que baja desde la parte más alta del cerro, es también un sonido característico del lugar. Luego también podemos escuchar los sonidos que emiten los animales, como el canto de los pájaros, los perros que ladran, los patos que siempre corren por el campo, así como los toros que trabajan en el campo arando la tierra. I am sharing an unusual audio recording from Lucma Pata that was created 10 years ago on a stormy afternoon with a lot of rain. Always before the rain begins, the sky changes color and with it the thunder is heard. The visual and sound warnings tell us that strong winds are approaching and that the rain that will be very strong. People return home or remain inside a safe place. It is incredible because the city can be congested by traffic or people. But, just after hearing these warning sounds, the city becomes silent. Because of the dangerous lightning, we take the precaution of turning off all the lights to avoid an accident. Farmers, on the other hand, are very happy when these rains come in times of drought because it helps their sowing.
Listening to this audio clip, you can hear the voices of the people who captured this moment. When the rains are intense, they bring hail with them and the noise intensifies making it more difficult to hear and communicate. In fact you have to shout to be heard. Without a doubt, a storm like this can silence all living beings because the force of the rain and wind. This whole episode can make us live a tense moment with great fear because an accident can occur - for example, not being able to see when driving causing a traffic accident, or also houses that were not well built could fall. This concern changes the way we react to the noise.
Listening to the sounds of my environment, I believe in the importance of taking care of all these natural spaces. Many things happen around us and we don’t always notice, but we should take care of our surroundings.
Estoy compartiendo una grabación de audio inusual de Lucma Pata que se creó hace 10 años en una tarde tormentosa con mucha lluvia. Siempre antes de que empiece la lluvia, el cielo cambia de color y con él se oye el trueno. Los avisos visuales y sonoros nos dicen que se acercan fuertes vientos y que la lluvia será muy fuerte. La gente regresa a casa o permanece en un lugar seguro. Es increíble porque la ciudad puede estar congestionada por el tráfico o la gente. Pero, justo después de escuchar estos sonidos de advertencia, la ciudad se silencia. Debido a los peligrosos rayos, tomamos la precaución de apagar todas las luces para evitar un accidente. Los agricultores, por otro lado, están muy contentos cuando estas lluvias llegan en tiempos de sequía porque ayuda a su siembra.
Al escuchar este clip de audio, puede escuchar las voces de las personas que capturaron este momento. Cuando las lluvias son intensas, traen granizo y el ruido se intensifica dificultando la audición y la comunicación. De hecho hay que gritar para ser escuchado. Sin duda, una tormenta como esta puede silenciar a todos los seres vivos por la fuerza de la lluvia y el viento. Todo este episodio puede hacernos vivir un momento tenso con mucho miedo porque puede ocurrir un accidente - por ejemplo, no poder ver al conducir provocando un accidente de tránsito, o también se podrían caer casas que no estaban bien construidas. Esta preocupación cambia la forma en que reaccionamos al ruido.
Al escuchar los sonidos de mi entorno, creo en la importancia de cuidar todos estos espacios naturales. Suceden muchas cosas a nuestro alrededor y no siempre nos damos cuenta, pero debemos cuidar nuestro entorno.
